In what is emerging as a ground-shaking move, the fire-spitting Member of Parliament for Kimilili, Hon Didmus Barasa, has called for a public engagement rally at Kimilili T-Junction next to the infamous Katiba Grounds on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 2 PM. This has come after the recent rejection of the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which has seen him get into the limelight and stir controversy and public interest.
The Finance Bill 2024 has been one that has elicited much debate in Kenyan politics, with many lawmakers and citizens speaking their minds very strongly for or against it. Even after the bill sailed through Parliament, Hon Barasa was still up in arms and strongly felt it would hurt the common mwananchi (citizen). He then hit back at his critics, who had tried to raise the issue on social media platforms.
A while back, Hon Barasa issued a statement outlining his reasons for rejecting the bill, stressing that he is guided by the need to protect the interests of his constituents. He outlined that, though the bill is targeted at mobilizing resources for development, it contained provisions capable of overburdening small business operators and ordinary citizens.
The next rally is expected to be the platform for Hon Barasa to further explain himself, including engaging with the people of Kimilili directly. This will be a big gathering, with many people curious to listen to their MP and air their views on this bill and many other matters.
The rally underlines Hon. Barasa’s determination to ensure transparency and accountability. He takes it upon himself to talk to the people about issues he should have transacted in the august House, not just to take a political stand. It also recognizes that there must be public participation in governance to articulate issues of great concern to the citizenry in the halls of power.
As the day comes, the expectation is raised within Kimilili. This rally is no ordinary political event, but it shall be evidence of how democratic and dynamic Kenyans are in this society. It’s a day for discussion and conversation, but more than that, it’s the day the people see their leaders.
