Residents Close down Kamonkoli Police Station Over Alleged Corruption

Residents of Mile Five, Mugiti Sub-County in Budaka District have closed Kamonkoli Police Station, protesting against alleged corruption by the Officer in Charge (OC), identified as Lwegaba David.

The residents claim that despite reporting cases to OC Lwegaba, he fails to take action unless a bribe is paid. Frustrated by this, the residents, shouting at the top of their voices, purchased padlocks and locked up the station, demanding the immediate transfer of the OC.

The residents recounted a recent incident where one of their fellow villagers, identified as Sabakaki Yowabu, was attacked at his home.

When he went to report the matter to OC Lwegaba, he was allegedly not helped and was told to return later. Tragically, while on his way back home, Sabakaki died from his injuries. This incident outraged the community, prompting them to close the police station and chase away the OC.

Efforts to reach Afande Lwegaba David for comments were unsuccessful, as he was nowhere to be found.

Bukedi North police spokesperson, Semewo Samuel while speaking to the media, acknowledged the incident, stating that the deceased had gone to the police station the previous day, bleeding heavily.

According to Semewo, the OC advised Sabakaki to seek medical attention first and then return to the station, denying that there was any refusal to assist him.

Semewo also dismissed the allegations of corruption against OC Lwegaba David.

According to the sources, the police station remained closed by the locals.
