Kyambogo University lecturer dismissed over aggravated defilement

Kyambogo University has dismissed one of their own stuff Dr. Eron Lawrence for defiling an underage disabled girl.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday at the Campus, Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, VC kyambogo University revealed that
the Appointments Board started hearing the case of Dr. Eron Lawrence at its 190th meeting which was held on 30th May 2024.

He however noted that several attempts to reach Dr. Eron had failed.

Katunguka noted that the university had served him hearing notices through his known email addresses and through his daughter , Ms Akello Eron.

He stated that the appointments Board Disciplinary Committee agreed to give him a benefit of doubt and directed Management to re-invite him through the print media and WhatsApp in addition to the previous methods of email and through the daughter.

“The print media summons was published on 5th June, 2024 in the New Vision newspaper requiring him to appear before the Appointments Board Disciplinary Committee on 19th June, 2024. Again, the summons was sent to his WhatsApp and email and also served to his daughter,” Katunguka said.

He noted that, during the meeting which was held on 19th June, 2024, by the Appointments Board Disciplinary Committee, Dr. Eron still did not appear and it is at this moment that the Disciplinary Committee noted that the University had exhausted all avenues to reach Dr. Eron Lawrence in vain and so, agreed to proceed ex-parte.

Katunguka noted that the University accordingly presented its case, in which Dr. Eron was charged with 3 counts as follows:

  1. Acts or omissions that damage the image or status of the University contrary to Regulation 10.5.2(b)(vii) of the Human Resources Manual 2014 as amended in 2022.
  2. Wilful insubordination contrary to Regulation 10.5.2(b)(xliv) of the Human Resources Manual 2014 as amended in 2022.
  3. Abscondment from duty contrary to Regulation 10.5.2(b)(i) of the Human Resources Manual 2014 as amended in 2022.

He noted that the University presented one witness, the Chief Human Resources who was the Chairperson of the Investigations Committee that had been appointed by the Vice Chancellor.

“The Case was adjourned to enable the University legal team make written submissions capturing the details of the investigation report”, he added.

“At its 196th meeting held on 24thJuly 2024, the Appointments Board Disciplinary Committee received and considered the written submissions from the University Legal team and agreed with the complainant to dismiss Dr. Eron from the service of the University on all the 3 counts. In reaching at the decision to dismiss him, the Appointments Board Disciplinary Committee found out that University proved its case to the balance of probabilities and found a verifiable misconduct against Dr. Eron,” he added.
