New Delhi India — Joshua Cheptegei Uganda’s long distance runner and a reigning 10km Olympics world champion has won the New Delhi Half Marathon in India.
The 10km Paris summer Olympic world record holder secured his 2024 victory in the men’s Half marathon with a timing of 59 minutes and 40 seconds beating Kenya’s Alex Matata, Who secured the second position with 59 minutes, and 50 seconds.
Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir, secured the third position with 59 minutes and 57 seconds.
Cheptegei ran with the leading group from the start to 16km with a group of five elite athletes which included Edris Muktar from Ethiopia.
As well a planner and well versed talented athlete, he hastened the speed to 2 minutes and 48 seconds per kilometer, leaving out two athletes out of five. However the two Kenyans Alex Matata and Nicholas Kipkorir persisted to the finish line securing the second and third position respectfully.
Cheptegei intensified the pace towards 500m to the end sprinting to the podium finish with joy and gratitude.
Cheptegei with joy attributed his victory to hard work, self esteem and learning from challenges.
Further he noted that he looks forward to participating in several Half marathons before jumping to the real 42 km marathon challenge.
