Hon Cherukut Emma Rose MP Kween District

Over 20k households to benefit from Kween gravity water project

A total of 20,000 households are set to benefit from a gravity flow water project in Kween district.

The project is part of a sh72b bigger scheme that is targeting to avail over 400,000 households in Kapchorwa, Bukedea, Bulambuli, Sironko, Kween and Bukwo districts with safe water for domestic use and irrigation.

The plant was constructed by the Ministry of Water and Environment, with support from the African Development Bank.

Eng. George Alito, the project co-ordinator in eastern Uganda, said: “We have obtained logistics to enable us to extend the gravity flow water project from the main plant in Kapchorwa to the community in Kween. The exercise is commencing as soon as we are done with a few formalities.”

Alito made the remarks during a follow-up meeting with Kween district Woman MP Rose Cherukut in Kween recently. The water extension exercise is set to cover 10 sub-counties that include Binyinyi town council, Kiptoyoy, Kapkwata, Kasereko, Kwayiy, Kamunakut,Kapron, Kaptum Mengya and up, Moyok.

Ann Chelangat, a resident of Binyiny sub-county, said the project comes at A time when effects of climate change are taking a heavy toll on the peasant community that relies on rain-fed farming.

Chelangat said at the beginning of the season, she would plant her p crops only to be destroyed by a dry spell. She said this always leaves them financially drained and without enough food. She is optimistic that when irrigation infrastructure is set up, she will not have to worry about the prolonged dry spell. Stella Chebet, a resident of

Kasereko sub-county, said whereas her area is endowed with numerous natural water source points like streams, clean and safe water points have always been hard to come by. MP Cherukut added: “The water project, particularly the irrigation component, will be impactful. People here are hardworking. Availability of water for irrigation would mean each house increasing productivity three-fold.”
