The woman member of Parliament Kween District , Hon Cherukut Emma Rose, has taken the battle of Soy Land grabbers to the floor of Parliament.
During the Tuesday afternoon session, Emma Rose brought to the attention of Parliament about rampant grabbing of land in Kamungei, Soy County, in Kween District.
According to her statement, a group of 13 rich people grabbed the land as big as 10,000 acres from her poor constituents and sold it to a Chinese Company at a tune of Ugshs 17 billion.
Emma noted that, the 13 people whom she didn’t mention their names took advantage of the situation when the Karamojong cattle rustlers displaced the indigenous people.
She noted that following the sale of Soy Land by land grabbers, many Kween District residents were left homeless.
The issue of Soy Land has caused a lot of wrangles among the locals with Many having no one to run to.
Emma requested the deputy speaker of Parliament , Hon Thomas Tayebwa who was chairing the house to constitute a committee who will stop further selling of Soy Land.
Further, she urged the speaker to prosecute the 13 people accused of grabbing the land and selling it.
The speaker however tasked the State minister of Lands Hon Kania Obiga, to look into the matter and get back to Parliament.
Following the directive from the speaker, the state minister of Lands pledged to look into the matter as soon as possible.
This has however given some hope to the residents who had felt hopeless.
The residents had on several occasions tried to reclaim their grabbed land but in vain and some ended up being arrested.
Last year, Many people were beaten and arrested while trying to reclaim their grabbed land.
