Kenyans Hold Shujaaz Memorial Concert to Honor Victims of Finance Bill 2024 Protests

On Sunday, July 7, 2024, a memorial concert will be held at Uhuru Park in Nairobi to honor the Kenyans who lost their lives during the protests against the Finance Bill 2024. The event, named the “#SabaSabaMarchForOurLives” will run from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with gates opening at 9:00 AM.

#SabaSabaMarchForOurLives is meant to mimic the historic protest that took place on July 7, 1990, demanding political reforms and multi-party democracy in Kenya.

#SabaSaba is often used in social movement in Kenya that fight issues such as police brutality, economic inequality, and human rights abuses.

The #SabaSabaMarchForOurLives concert which is free and open to everyone, in this case, aims to remember and pay tribute to the brave individuals who stood up against the Finance Bill 2024 and tragically lost their lives during the demonstrations.

KEnyans online chose the word “Shujaaz” which means heroes in Kiswahili, symbolizing the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for their beliefs. Among those who died is Rex a 29year old man from Ukambani.

Organizers have planned a day full of music, speeches, and activities to bring the community together in solidarity and reflection. Local artists and musicians will perform, and speakers will share stories and memories of the fallen heroes.

The protests against the Finance Bill 2024 were marked by significant unrest as citizens voiced their concerns over the proposed economic measures.

The Finance Bill protests have turned to be one of the deadliest in Kenya’s recent history.

Major news channels and human rights activists say that the demonstrations turned violent due to police brutality and use of excessive force, leading to several deaths and numerous injuries.

Majority of those attending the Shujaaz Memorial Concert say that this is a chance for the community to heal and find strength in unity. It’s an opportunity to remember the past and inspire future actions towards justice and equality in Kenya and especially for the young people.
