A military aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other individuals has gone missing after it failed to make a scheduled landing on Monday.
The plane, which departed from the capital city of Lilongwe, vanished from radar screens approximately 45 minutes after takeoff, leaving authorities scrambling to locate the missing aircraft.
According to a statement from the president’s office, the plane, which was carrying the 51-year-old Vice President and his delegation, was expected to land at Mzuzu International Airport, approximately 370 kilometers (230 miles) north of Lilongwe.
However, contact with the plane was lost, prompting an immediate search operation to locate Vice President Chilima and his companions.
President Lazarus Chakwera, who was en route to the Bahamas for a working visit, has canceled his trip and returned to Malawi to oversee the search efforts.
The president has ordered regional and national forces to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft.
The incident has left the nation in a state of uncertainty, with the public eagerly awaiting updates on the search and rescue efforts.
The circumstances surrounding the disappearance remain a mystery, and the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
