Unidentified Disease Strikes South Mugirango,Over 200 Confirmed Sick

Three villages in South Mugirango are in distress following the outbreak of a mysterious illness that has left over 200 residents sick. A multi-agency government team, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has urged locals to seek medical attention at nearby hospitals while awaiting test results from the government chemist.

On Saturday morning, Veronica Nyomenda, accompanied by fellow Amarondo villagers, rushed one of her three children to the hospital after the child fell ill. The disease, which has spread rapidly, has caused severe diarrhea with bloody stools, fever, and intense headaches for the past two weeks. However, due to financial difficulties, Nyomenda was forced to take her daughter back home without receiving treatment.

A few meters away, another family is facing a similar struggle. Seven members have fallen sick, including their mother, who is now unable to walk and relies on neighbors for assistance.

About 200 meters from this homestead, another household is caring for loved ones suffering from the same symptoms. Many of the sick have been relying on antibiotics from a nearby level two hospital, but the pain persists, offering little relief.

The outbreak has also affected an orphanage, where more than 15 children were rushed to the hospital after exhibiting similar symptoms.

In response, a multi-agency team has been moving from village to village, trying to understand the cause of the outbreak. Health officials have advised residents to boil drinking water, and samples have been sent to the government chemist for further analysis.

Since the outbreak began, an unconfirmed number of locals have been hospitalized at Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level Two Hospital, Prina Hospital, and Royal Hospital in Rongo, among other private healthcare facilities.

As fear grips the community, many residents are struggling to find medical help, while others can only wait anxiously for answers from health authorities. The mysterious illness continues to spread, raising concerns over what might be causing it and how it can be contained.
