Kapchorwa Hospital Cracks Down on Illegal Garbage Dumping

The Kapchorwa Hospital administration has issued a stern warning against the dumping of garbage and solid waste in the hospital’s lagoon and neighboring land. The practice, which has been ongoing, has silted the lagoon, rendering it useless for its purpose of managing liquid waste.

According to Mr. Kumakech Oluba Charles, Chief Administrative Officer, the hospital’s senior management meeting on August 20, 2024, addressed the issue, citing health hazards such as cholera, dysentery, and smell nuisance. The hospital has allocated funds in the 2024/25 financial year to restore the lagoon to its original use.

The administration has directed the Municipal Council to cease dumping garbage and waste in the lagoon and neighboring land, as it will increase the cost of rehabilitation. The council’s staff, including division clerks and truck drivers, have been instructed to refrain from taking more garbage to the area, as it will sabotage the hospital’s plans.

The move aims to protect the health and well-being of patients, staff, and neighboring communities, who rely on the nearby stream for various purposes.
