Kapchorwa District Ebola Taskforce Committee Convenes Amid Outbreak Concerns

Kapchorwa, 7th February 2025 – The Kapchorwa District Ebola Taskforce Committee convened today at the District Council Hall following the confirmation of an Ebola virus outbreak in the country on 30th January 2025.

The urgency of the meeting was driven by reports indicating that the first confirmed case had contacts at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. Sources further revealed that a patient from Kween, along with their attendants, had been admitted to the same ward as the confirmed case. Given the proximity of these contacts to the Sebei region, the task force deemed it necessary to hold an emergency meeting.

During the session, the committee resolved to implement the following measures to mitigate the spread of the virus:

  1. Public Sensitization – Continuous awareness campaigns through media and community gatherings.
  2. Formation of Subcommittees – Establishing specialized teams focusing on response coordination, surveillance, infection prevention and control, psychosocial support, logistics, and laboratory services.
  3. Handwashing Facilities – Reinstating handwashing stations in all public places.
  4. Regular Taskforce Meetings – The committee will convene weekly to monitor the situation and enhance response strategies.

The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Martin Sakajja, and attended by key district leaders, including the LCV Chairperson, Deputy Mayor of Kapchorwa Municipality Council (KMC), District Internal Security Officer (DISO), Secretary for Social Services, District Health Officer (DHO), Principal Health Officer (PHO), Assistant District Health Officer (ADHO), Principal Nursing Officer (PNO), and other health professionals.
