Meru University Researchers Develop Innovative Muguka Energy Drink

Researchers at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) have developed and patented a new Muguka energy drink, aiming to compete with top brands in the market. This product is part of the university’s effort to improve the economic viability of Muguka, a crop related to Miraa (Khat).

The energy drink, made from Muguka, is the result of extensive research by a team of experts at MUST. The university has been exploring alternative uses for Miraa and Muguka, focusing on their medicinal properties and creating value-added products.

Dr. Patrick Kinyua, head of the project, emphasized, “Many studies have focused on the negative aspects of Miraa and Muguka. We want to show the world that positive products can come from these crops.”

The researchers believe that by removing the negative compounds from Miraa and Muguka, they can highlight their positive attributes and improve the crop’s economic prospects. The Muguka energy drink is expected to be available at local kiosks, offering a convenient and innovative option for consumers.

Besides the energy drink, MUST researchers have developed other products from Miraa and Muguka, including chewing gum, wine, concentrated juice, and powder. These products showcase the crops’ versatility and potential for value addition.

The development of the Muguka energy drink comes at a crucial time, as the Miraa industry faces challenges like a recent ban in the coastal region. By creating alternative products, the researchers aim to provide new opportunities for farmers and boost the crop’s economic outlook.
