Business owners along Mukanga-Nauyo Road in Mbale Industrial City Division were left in shock on Tuesday as City Council removed their temporary structures (Kiosks) to clear the way for the construction of a modern road.
The project which is under USMID aims to boost economic growth in the area.
Local residents have applauded the initiative, emphasizing the need for a proper road to stimulate development in the area.
Wanda Moses, a resident of Nauyo, told media that the community has embraced the project because they recognize its potential to bring progress.
“If the residents were against the project, there would have been significant resistance,” he added.
“We have suffered long enough with accidents, dust and poor drainage. When we requested a city status, we knew we needed good roads, clean water, electricity, and other infrastructure to support development.” Wanda said.
Wilson Lukaye, the youth councilor for Mbale Industrial City Division, appreciated the City Council leadership for initiating the Nauyo road project.
Speaking to Bugisu Intellectual, Lukaye urged the City Council and contractors to expedite construction so residents can resume work, many of whom are daily earners.
Jalia Kanakwa, chairperson of the NRM Women’s League in Nauyo, expressed gratitude to the government for bringing development to the area.
“Maybe people are skeptical, but if they truly deliver tarmac, it will be a significant improvement.” She said.
James Kutosi, Senior Public Relations Officer for Mbale City Council, clarified that properties along Nauyo Road were not demolished forcefully.
“Most property owners removed their structures voluntarily after several consultations with residents and city officials,” he said. “Of course, not everyone will agree, but we follow over 95 percent majority.”
“The 1.6 km road stretches from the Mbale-Tororo Highway beyond Light Hour Primary School in Nauyo. In this financial year, we will focus on the drainage system and murram. By July, in the next financial year, we plan to lay tarmac, install street lights and solar panels to reduce crime rate. Kutosi revealed.
He appreciated those who accepted to work with council, stating that this cooperation will help create a better place to live and promote development in the area like never before.
