In a heartwarming act of compassion, Kween District Member of Parliament, Hon. William Chemonges, has stepped in to rescue a homeless family that was found sleeping under a tree in Kapkwata, Kween District. The family, identified as Simon Cherista of the Kasume/Kapcherotich clan from Cherakan Village, Cherakan Parish, had been living under the tree for three days after being evicted from their previous residence.
The family’s plight came to light when photos of their dire situation were shared on social media by a concerned resident, Ayekos. The images quickly garnered widespread attention, prompting Hon. Chemonges to take immediate action. The MP dispatched his personal assistant to verify the situation, and it was confirmed that the family had been sleeping under the tree with no proper bedding, using only a tarpaulin to cover themselves.
Moved by their suffering, Hon. Chemonges arranged for temporary accommodation for the family and provided them with mattresses, bedding, and financial assistance to help them get back on their feet. The MP’s intervention has brought relief to the family, who had been struggling to survive with no food or shelter.
Background of the Family’s Struggles
According to sources, Simon Cherista, the head of the family, had fled his home years ago after being accused of possessing ammunition. He sought refuge in Masindi District, where he lived for over a decade. During his time in Masindi, Simon sold his land back home, hoping to build a new life. Unfortunately, his plans did not materialize, and he eventually returned to his village, where he was given a family house to live in.
However, Simon’s stay in the family house was short-lived, as he was later evicted by his brothers. He then rented a house for his family but eventually returned to Masindi, cutting off communication with his family. It is believed that Simon may have remarried in Masindi, leaving his original family vulnerable and without support.
Following the MP’s intervention, several members of the community have come forward to support the family. Plans are underway to provide them with a permanent home, ensuring they no longer have to endure the hardships of homelessness. Hon. Chemonges’ actions have not only provided immediate relief but also inspired others to contribute to the family’s well-being.
This act of kindness highlights the importance of community and leadership in addressing social issues. Hon. Chemonges’ swift response serves as a reminder of the impact that compassionate leadership can have on the lives of those in need.
As the family begins to rebuild their lives, they expressed gratitude to the MP and the community for their support, hoping for a brighter future ahead.
