Nairobi, Kenya — June 7, 2024:
Ian Njoroge, the 19-year-old student who assaulted a traffic police officer in Mirema, has been released on a bond by a Nairobi Millimani Law court.
Ian Njoroge had been charged with assaulting a 57-year-old traffic police after he was confronted for making a U-turn on the road.
The court, presided over by Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi, ruled in favor of Njoroge’s case and released him on a Bond of Ksh 700,000/- application after considering the prosecution’s arguments.
The prosecution had opposed Njoroge’s release, citing concerns about his safety due to the intense public outcry following the incident. They also argued that he was a flight risk and may interfere with witnesses.
The prosecution had stated that Ian would pose an eminent danger to the police who arrested him but the magistrate deems this a “ghastly thought” and ruled otherwise.
However, Njoroge’s lawyers presented a strong case, highlighting his good character and the fact that he had cooperated fully with the police investigation.
Therefore, the Judge, Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi, ruled in favor of Ian Njoroge and released him on a Bond of Ksh 700,000/-
The case has garnered significant attention, reflecting broader concerns about law enforcement and judicial fairness in Kenya.
The outcome will have lasting implications for both Njoroge’s future and the broader context of justice and policing in the country.
