Government Deploys Technical Team to Assess Kisitya Rock Crack Threat in Kapchorwa

Kapchorwa, Uganda – A high-level multisectoral team led by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has arrived in Kapchorwa to assess the growing crack in Kisitya Rock, which poses a serious threat to the surrounding communities.

Komakech Charles, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kapchorwa, confirmed the arrival of the team, which includes experts from the UPDF Engineering Brigade, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Ministry of Water and Environment, the Ministry of Lands, and geologists from Makerere University.

The intervention follows multiple letters from local authorities to the OPM, raising concerns about the crack that has developed in the rock. Officials fear that the rock could collapse at any time, endangering residents living nearby.

“The crack is posing a very big danger to the population because at any time, that rock can fall. We don’t know when, but the way it looks, it could be any time,” said Komakech.

According to a letter from the OPM dated January 20, 2025, a Government Technical Working Group (TWG) was formed to conduct a comprehensive study of Kisitya Rock. The TWG will review past assessments and provide expert advice on the best course of action to mitigate the risk.

The team began its work with a meeting involving the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), district officials, and other stakeholders. On Wednesday, they will engage with heads of department from Natural Resources, Production, and Community Development to outline the terms of reference for their operations.

The next phase of the mission involves an on-site assessment of the rock, measurements, and analysis to determine possible interventions. Officials are considering options such as controlled blasting or alternative methods to stabilize the rock.

The assessment is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, January 28, to Monday, February 3, 2025. A final report with recommendations will be presented to the government for further action.
