Cracked Stone in Kapchorwa Municipality Puts 500 Lives at Risk, Community Urges Government Intervention

KAPCHORWA, UGANDA- The Kaptanya and Siron Communities in Kapchorwa Municipality are living in fear of losing lives and property due to a cracked stone that has widened over the past years, posing a significant threat of falling.

According to residents, the stone, known locally as Karerat, started with a small crack but has since expanded to several meters wide, putting a population of 500 people in Five villages -Kisitya Village Sitya , Cheptilyal, Swesat, and Keibet – at risk.

Denis Soyekwo, LC 3 Chairperson of Kaptanya sub-county, described the situation as “very threatening” and appealed to the government to speed up compensation for affected residents and blast the rock to prevent disaster.

Chelimo Stephen, a resident, expressed frustration that despite engaging relevant authorities, the process has been delayed, and the community is still waiting for a clear solution.

The affected area is also home of several critical institutions, Including: Schools , Health Facilities, Churches among others

The community is urging the government not to wait for a disaster to occur before taking action, citing the risk of losing lives and property. They are requesting a settlement allowance to relocate temporarily while the rock is blasted and made safe.

The cracked stone has already claimed lives, with animals and people falling into the deep crevice created by the expanding crack. The community is calling for immediate government intervention to prevent further tragedy.
