Police in Tororo have confirmed the death of two people following a tragic accident on Monday evening at Magodes Trading Centre along the Tororo-Mbale Road. The crash was reportedly caused by a mechanical fault.
Bukedi South Region Police spokesperson, IP Mugwe Johnson Moses, stated that the accident involved a Fuso fighter truck (registration number UAY 044V) carrying oranges and 19 passengers from Kumi to Busia.
“The vehicle suffered a mechanical failure when a front tyre detached, causing the driver to lose control and overturn the truck.” Mugwe said.
Police identified the deceased as Akello Margaret and Stella Okello. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Tororo Main Hospital for treatment.
“The bodies have been taken to Tororo Hospital mortuary for postmortem. We are also tracing four missing victims and the driver, who fled the scene and is yet to be identified,” Mugwe said.
He urged road users to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, especially for those transporting people and goods, to prevent mechanical faults that can lead to such tragedies.
