Kapchorwa district—A man has committed suicide inside police cells after he was detained for eating Burial condolence fee.
The suspect committed suicide inside Kapchesombe police post were he was being held. According to the sources, the incident happened on Thursday between 5-6 PM.
The deceased has been identified as Chemutai Joseph, a resident of Twenke village, Tambacha parish, Kapseko Sub-County, kapchorwa Municipality.
According to eye witnesses, the suspect Chemutai was entrusted by his clan members to be the secretary during the burial of his father in-law Kiplangat Andrew, a resident of Adar Cell, Kaplokor ward, East division, kapchorwa Municipality.
However as he was entrusted with the condolence fee, he decided to go use part of the money amounting to Ugshs 430k.
It’s alleged that after the burial, he took some of the money and went to a certain bar called River side and ordered crates of beer and started drinking.
However, on the next day while the burial committee was counting the money, it was found that some money was missing. However on investigation, it was found that Chemutai didn’t submit some of the money.
“When he was asked, Chemutai at first admitted that he was given the money but he had mistakenly forgotten to write down but on the committee asking him to bring the money, he had nothing to give them,” one of the eye witnesses told this publication.
The committee however decided to arrest him and take him to kapchesombe police post. It’s also alleged that the committee tried setting the issue on Thursday but the suspect became stubborn and said he was going to remain in cells.
However, when the police went to transfer him to were other suspects sleep at around 7:00pm , they found he had committed suicide using his clothe.
It’s believed that he committed suicide to save himself from community shame for eating in-laws condolences.
This publication contacted Sipi region police Spokesperson Fredmark Chesang, who confirmed the incident but didn’t comment much about the incident noting that he had not received a full report at the time of publication.
