The speaker of parliament Hon Anita Among has directed the minister of lands to expedite the process of establishing the rampant land grabbing and sell in soi county, and report to parliament as soon as possible. This follows a motion tabled by hon Cherukut Emma Rose Woman Member of Parliament Kween District.
In a letter seen by this publication dated 14th August 2024, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among noted that the District Woman Representative for Kween approached her office seeking her intervention concerning cases of land grabbing in the lower belt of Kween and Kapcharwa Districts.
“My attention has been drawn to the resultant risks of land grabbing in the above Districts, including but not limited to loss of livelihood, destruction of the environment and undermining of trust in Government and the rule of law,” read part of the letter.
In the letter Among, further guided the Minister of Lands to expedite the task since the responsibility is under his docket.
“Since matters of sustainable land management and usage falls under your Ministry, I hereby refer the attached petition to you for your consideration and feedback.I have copied the same letter to the District Woman Representative for Kween to avail you any additional information related to the matter in question to facilitate the expedinous handling,” read the letter.
Earlier this month, the woman member of Parliament Kween District, Hon Cherukut Emma Rose, took it to the floor of Parliament accusing about 13 individuals of grabbing the land of poor locals.
During the Tuesday 8th August 2024, afternoon session, Emma Rose brought to the attention of Parliament about rampant grabbing of land in Kamungei, Soy County, in Kween District.
According to her statement, a group of 13 rich people grabbed the land as big as 10,000 acres from her poor constituents and sold it to a Chinese Company at a tune of Ugshs 17 billion.
Emma noted that, the 13 people whom she didn’t mention their names took advantage of the situation when the Karamojong cattle rustlers displaced the indigenous people.
She noted that following the sale of Soy Land by land grabbers, many Kween District residents were left homeless.
