Mother dumps her new born baby in a pit latrine

A new born baby boy was rescued and rushed to the hospital after the mother dumped her in the pit latrine.

The mother has been identified as Ainembabazi Moreen , aged 18, who has been working as a house maid at Niwagaba Praise, a resident of Nansana  East II zone, Nansana municipality.

According to the police spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan, Patrick Onyango, the incident happened between 6:00 am and 7:00am on Tuesday 6th January 2025.

Oyango, noted that Ainembabazi’s employer Niwagaba, aged 39, who is a breastfeeding mother made an alarm after she noticed Ainembabazi’s delay to return from to the house.

“Upon investigating, Niwagaba found Moreen in the pit latrine room with bloodstains on herself and the floor. She then heard the baby crying inside the pit latrine,” Onyango added.

He further noted that the police were informed and a team from the fire brigade department visited the scene, dug and rescued the baby. The good news is that the baby was found alive, washed with warm water and rushed to Kawempe, Mulago Referral hospital together with the mother who is to have been bleeding for further management.

Onyango, however said that a case of infanticide was registered at Nansana police station and they have commenced investigations.  He also added that the police intend to thoroughly interview Ainembabazi, to ascertain her motives and also intend the person responsible for the pregnancy.

He further noted that there has been growing trend in Kampala were mothers dump children in the pit latrines, pointing a similar case whereby a woman aged 25 years dumped her new born baby in a pit latrine in Kasangati.
