A man in Pallisa district in Eastern Uganda took his own life after the wife divorced him and married another man.
The deceased identified as Moses John Odongo aged 53, is a resident of Omindi cell, Omauron ward, Kibaale town council in Pallisa district.
According to Mr Moses Kityo Mwanga, the North Bukedi regional police commander, Odongo had been married to Rose Akurut for 10 years and has been staying at the wife’s parents’compound in Agurur cell and had one child together.
However it’s alleged that he had a misunderstanding with the wife over cheating on him. It’s said that the wife left him at her parents home and went away.
The in-laws however told him to leave them home since the wife had left. Subsequently Odongo left for his home village in Omindi cell, Omauron ward, Kibaale town council in Pallisa district .
However after some time, Odongo returned to his inlaws house to pick his things, however on arrival he learned that the wife had married and brought another man in the same house they were living in together. Following this discovery, a fight erupted prompting the mother-in-law Regina Akurut to intervene in support of her daughter.
However during the scuffle, it is reported that Odongo allegedly hit the mother in-law with a blunt object.
The incident was reported to the area LC1 who called for police intervention.
Odongo was arrested and taken to Kibaale police post. However Mwanga said that during a normal police inspection in police cells, they found a lifeless body of Odongo hanging in the cells.
He noted that he used his shirt to hang himself.
Further, Mwanga said that the postmortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the relatives.
