Man hacked to death for stealing coffee in Kween District

Police in Kween District are investigating a situation whereby unknown people hacked a coffee thief to death.

The suspect has been identified as Chemutai Fred, 29, a resident of Kaptawat village, Kerop Parish, Kaptoyoy Sub-County, Kween District.

According to the Sipi region police Spokesperson Fredmark Chesang, the incident happened in Kew Cell, Kamusongi ward, Benyiny town council, Kween District.

The suspect was discovered on Monday morning by the school going children lying dead along the road leading to Kapnarkut.

Chesang told this publication on Tuesday on the phone that after the discovery the children informed the area of people who came to the scene and later informed Kween District police .

“The suspect’s hands were cut and separated from the body with deep cuts on the head and other parts,” Chesang said.

The police arrived at the scene and the b body was taken to Kapchorwa hospital mortuary pending postpartum.

Chesang noted that the suspect is alleged that had stolen the coffee cherries from the garden of one Bushendich Alfred though it is not confirmed noting that they are still investigating,according to him.

He noted that, the body, panga and fresh coffee cherries were recovered from the scene of crime.

He noted that nobody has been arrested following the incident but they are investigating to ascertain the circumstances involving the issue.

Chesang however cautioned the public to desist from mob justice noting that it’s a crime and punishable by law.

Further he advised the thieves to desist from stealing noting that they may continue losing their lives yet they could be having some responsibilities to take care of back at home.

There is an increase coffee theft in sebei region since it’s harvesting season. Just on Monday, another coffee thief was arrested in Kaserem Sub-County.
