Action Aid today Monday hosted a quarterly engagement session, convening district women leaders and wives of councilors from Kapchorwa and Kween districts to address Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) at Eagles scenery Hotel in Kapchorwa.
Evelyn Kubarika Chebet, Kapchorwa district LC5, Emphasized the collective responsibility in fighting FGM and shifting the focus from individuals to Community.
Chebet called on ActionAid and UNFPA to add funding, to enable the district women leaders to organize talk shows and barazas to raise awareness.
The meeting which was held on Monday highlighted collaborative efforts among local leaders, organizations, and stakeholders to eradicate harmful practices.
Despite efforts to end FGM, problems persist, ranging from including limited funding, lack of education, and cultural beliefs. In Sebei and Karamoja regions, FGM prevalence remains high, with 50% and 95% respectively.
