Kampala, Uganda – Hon. Bahinduka Mugarra Martin, the Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, has addressed Parliament regarding the alleged torture and killing of Judah Mangusho Siwa, a resident of Kween District, by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) officers.
While responding to concerns raised by Hon. Chemonges William, the MP for Kween, the minister described the incident as unfortunate and assured the House that action has been taken.
“The four officers involved have been suspended. I have personally written to the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter. If our officers are found culpable, they will be dealt with according to the law.” Hon Bahinduka stated.
The minister revealed that Siwa’s burial has not yet taken place due to a disagreement between two families over the final resting place. However, the government has provided financial support amounting to UGX 6.5 million to assist with funeral arrangements.
“We will continue engaging the family to ensure a resolution while also maintaining good relations between the community and our rangers,” Hon. Bahinduka added.
The minister assured Parliament that all recommendations made by the committee investigating the matter will be reviewed and implemented accordingly.
This response comes after a heated parliamentary debate where MPs accused UWA of excessive force and a pattern of violence against Sebei residents. The matter remains under investigation, with Parliament set to discuss it further in an upcoming session.
