Kasese, Uganda – Police in Kasese District have launched a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Police Constable (PC) John Kanane, a respected officer suspected to have died by suicide. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

PC Kanane, who was stationed at Kasese Central Police Station, allegedly took his own life on Friday evening. According to preliminary reports, Kanane locked himself inside his room at the police barracks before fatally shooting himself. The sound of a gunshot alerted nearby passersby, who quickly noticed smoke emanating from the room. Their immediate alarm prompted fellow officers to rush to the scene, where they discovered Kanane lying in a pool of blood. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Police regional community liaison officer, confirmed the incident and described Kanane as a dedicated and well-respected member of the force.

“PC Kanane was known for his unwavering commitment to duty and his strong sense of integrity. He was frequently assigned to guard the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) offices, a role that required trust and reliability,” Mbusa stated.

Kanane, originally from Budaka District, had built a reputation as a dependable officer during his time in Kasese. His sudden death has left colleagues and community members in mourning, with many struggling to comprehend what could have driven him to such a desperate act.

Authorities have not yet determined a clear motive for the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police are examining all possible angles, including whether personal or professional pressures may have contributed to Kanane’s decision. Mental health and the well-being of law enforcement officers have increasingly become topics of concern, with many calling for better support systems to address the unique stresses faced by those in the force.
