Businesses in Nairobi’s Central Business District Remain Closed Ahead of Planned Protests

As Kenyans prepare for another round of nationwide protests against the government, businesses in Nairobi’s central business district (CBD) have largely remained closed.

Even before the scheduled demonstrations on Tuesday, the majority of shops and other enterprises within the CBD were already closed. The decision to close shop was made by business owners concerned about potential disruptions and safety risks during the demonstrations.

The public transport system in the area has also been clearly disrupted, with matatus and other vehicles parked up instead of operating. There are fewer matatu and public transport in Nairobi.

This comes as the Kenyan economy continues to reel from the impact of the previous protests, which saw businesses suffer heavy losses due to looting and vandalism. Most small and medium sized businesses fear losing more merchandize to protests.

As the country braces for another day of protests, most businesses in Nairobi’s CBD remain unoperational, with uncertainty looming over the protests are going to happen today.
